Favorite Healthy Cooking Blogs

I've been surfing the web and looking for healthy bloggers.  Obviously not everyone agrees on the same diet.  I'm trying to be a whole grains (How to Lower Your Fat Thermostat), no sweeteners (except a little honey and maple syrup), low fat (except for some healthy fats like olive oil, almonds and avocados) kind of gal.

Many people have gluten allergies so whole grains aren't going to work for them.  Some people prefer to be vegan.  I understand.  I'm finding that even if the diet I'm eating doesn't mesh exactly with a fellow blogger's diet there is still so much to learn and so many adaptable great recipes shared that I am grateful to visit their blogs and learn from them.

Here are some of my favorite healthy eating blogs- (I hope you like them too):

Daily Bites

Deliciously Organic

Kalyn's Kitchen

Live. Laugh. Eat.

Nourished Kitchen

Oh She Glows

Sprouted Kitchen

Steamy Kitchen

The Nourishing Gourmet

The Whole Life Nutrition Kitchen

Simply Sugar and Gluten Free

Another reason I like these blogs is that I feel like I'm not alone on my journey to better health.  It is motivational to read of others improved health through diet and exercise.  Mmmm, I think I'll go grab a carrot or something!

Some Sweet Things allowed on my healthy eating plan

My new healthy eating plan allows for no sweeteners except for honey and fruit juice.... so, what do I put on my whole wheat pancakes????

Well,  I like St. Dalfour Red Raspberry all natural 100%  fruit jam- sweetened with concentrated grape juice- available at HEB (if you live in Texas).

I also like R.W. Knudsen organic apple butter- sweetened with apple juice- I purchased mine at the health food store- but our Wal Mart used to carry it.

When I'm craving a sweet treat I like Barbara's Fig Newtons in raspberry flavor- sweetened with a bunch of concentrated fruit juices.

Or sometimes I just eat three Krispy Kreme doughnuts- but I'm trying!

Mini Vacation To Dallas Texas

We took the family on a mini vacation to Dallas Texas this past week.  We spent some time exploring the museums in fair park.  We love the Dallas Zoo but it was just too hot to be outside- so, we skipped that venue and opted for time spent in a sunshine water mix.

We had fun at the spray-ground in Allen, Texas.

However, the hit of the trip was the day spent at the North Garland Hawaiian Falls Water park .  I was totally impressed with this park.  It was spotlessly clean (even the bathrooms!).  The employees were friendly, professional and helpful- the tubes and slides were more then scary enough for me- and the lines were much shorter then those at the larger water parks (like six flags and Sea World).  The picture is from their website.

Tip:  Hit the water park in the middle of the week and buy the family pass- it includes unlimited drinks and a meal for each person.

Another Healthy Cookbook

I found another cookbook that I like.  It is called Quick and Easy Meals .  I believe it is from the editors of Diabetic Living Magazine.  I found the recipes to be made from mostly fresh ingredients and whole grains.  They are not necessarily low in fat. Some recipes call for egg substitutes.  I'm not adverse to eggs- so, I just use fresh eggs (from our chickens).  Contrary to the one review on Amazon very few of the recipes called for sugar and those that did called for very small amounts- like 1 Tablespoon.

This book has a large selection of salads and quite a few soups too- they all look delish!  We tried the Mexican chicken, avocado & orange salad for dinner- I improvised on the chicken and will have to try it again following the exact recipe- but I really liked the citrus vinaigrette dressing and intend to make the salad again- maybe just omitting the chicken.... or as I said, actually following the recipe :o)

I love cookbooks with pictures and this book has a picture for every recipe.  I'm looking forward to trying more of the recipes!

And while I'm thinking healthy- I LOVE this whole wheat banana bread!  I didn't measure the bananas- I just used two very large ripe ones and I only baked the bread for 45 min.- it was perfectly done and very tasty- I actually hid a slice or two in my room to eat after the hungry hordes subsided.

Wellbutrin Cross Stitch Sampler

I don't know if I dreamed up this sarcastic saying or if I saw it somewhere- I did a search and couldn't find it.... so, if you see it someplace else let me know quick so that I can make my apologies.  Thanks!

The free pattern to this sassy saying can be found here.  Happy Stitching!

Blog Suggestions

I hope you had a fabulous fourth of July.  Because of drought conditions causing extreme fire danger in our area all fireworks were cancelled- but that didn't stop us from having a fun and patriotic day.  We went to a flag raising ceremony and breakfast at the church and ended the evening at a  BBQ with family and friends.

True to form I'm still taking it easy (thus all photos are from the past) but I did find a few other blogs that are filled with great ideas.

The Floss Box is sharing basic embroidery stitching lessons- a perfect craft for while you hide indoors from the heat and watch an old movie (try Libeled Lady with Myrna Loy).

Need a summer project?  An awesome way to organize the gazillions of digital family photos we all have was shared by Amanda over at the crafting chicks

Want to try some healthy recipes?  How about checking out the sprouted kitchen or Oh, she glows -
while I'm not vegetarian or vegan trying to eat in a healty way is paying off- my husband commented yesterday that my jeans were looking ridculously baggy and would I like him to go shopping with me to find some new ones.... yeehaw!  That is about the nicest thing anyone has said to me this year :o)  (Talbot's signature jeans pictured above- not my photo yet- darn!).
